SMARTair® Brings Flexible Access Control to a Dutch Superstore
Witzand has been a renowned supplier of wood and other building materials since the 1890s. Their head office and largest retail outlet — dubbed “XL” — is at Almelo, in the eastern Netherlands. Here the company designed their new building with openness in mind, to stock and display a vast range of their products, including a specialist woodwork department which supplies all kinds of wood materials. Witzand’s new building also needed a brand new access system.

With SMARTair wireless access control, Witzand facility managers can tailor the precise security levels they need for different areas of the building. It’s easy to manage and amend access rights for every site user.A combination of battery-powered SMARTair devices — wireless escutcheons, cylinders and wall readers — ensure security at their new Almelo building meets the demands of a busy mixed-use environment. Employees carry programmable MIFARE® smart cards which allow them to freely use offices and secure warehouse areas. Shoppers only have access to the retail areas of this new superstore during opening hours.
The Almelo installation runs via an Update on Card system, which is adapted to premises with medium to high daily user traffic. Strategically located wall updaters provide a link between the software and SMARTair-protected doors. With Update on Card management, administrators can set time-limited access rights and order audit trails when needed. It is easy to cancel a card’s access permissions if an employee leaves — and there’s no need to worry about unauthorised copies of physical keys. It’s even easy for non-specialists to manage a SMARTair installation with the bundled, fullfeatured TS1000 admin software.
